Subjects of a Sentence: What is a Subject?

What are subjects in a sentence? The subject of a sentence is the person or thing doing the action or being described. There are 3 terms used for subjects: simple subject, complete subject and compound subject. Simple subject: Tom wears a coat. Complete subject: This girl is tall. • Simple subjects: A single word that is the subject of a verb.
• Eva wants some cheese.
• Kris likes to watch cartoons.

• Complete subjects: Uses modifiers to add information to the simple subject.
• This girl puts a look of make-up on.
• That boy wears a red hat.
• Those women are talking loudly.
• These men are being rude.

• Compound subjects: A subject with two or more simple subjects.
• Tim and Tom go to school early.
